maybe discipline isn’t the problem

Hi friend,

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Because if I’m honest… I struggle with discipline too. Not always in the obvious way. I’m not someone who avoids responsibility or doesn’t try. If anything, I can swing the other direction.

Trying to do too much.
Trying to be “on top of everything.”
Trying to force consistency through intensity.

And I’ve come to realize something. That version of discipline? It doesn’t lead to peace. It leads to unnecessary pressure. Pressure that isn't conducive to raising little humans the way the Lord intended for me.

But what if discipline isn’t supposed to look like either of those extremes? For the last few months, I’ve been thinking about something I’m calling calm discipline.

Not intense. Not rigid. Not rooted in pressure.

But steady. Intentional. And faithful over time.

Because Scripture doesn’t describe discipline as chaotic or exhausting. Hebrews describes it as something that yields peaceful fruit.

This week’s podcast episode is all about redefining discipline through that lens.

Ep 25 | Why You Struggle With Discipline as a Christian Mom (and How to Stay Consistent Without Burnout)

Listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify

In this episode, I talk about:

  • why discipline feels so hard for moms
  • the misconception that discipline has to be harsh or rigid
  • why discipline is a practice — not a personality trait
  • how discernment helps you avoid burnout
  • what calm discipline actually looks like in real life

Hustle is loud. Discipline is quiet.

And I think that’s where so many of us get tripped up. We’ve been taught to associate discipline with intensity.

But biblical discipline looks a lot more like:

  • showing up again tomorrow
  • doing the next right thing
  • being faithful with what’s in front of you

You don’t have to be a “naturally disciplined person” to grow in this. Discipline isn’t an identity. It’s a practice. And it’s something we can grow in — slowly, steadily, and faithfully.

I’d really love to hear from you on this one. Which side do you tend to fall on more? Or hit reply and tell me — I genuinely read and respond to every single email.

Cheering you on,

P.S. If this idea of calm discipline resonates with you, I’d love for you to be part of something I’m building — the Calm Discipline Collective. It's a simple way to share something you're learning, a practical tip, or a question you're working through, so we can grow in this together (without relying on social media).
