my husband has a favorite version of me

Hey friend,

A couple weeks ago, someone close to me shared something that I have not been able to stop thinking about. Her husband jokingly calls her a "human doing" instead of a human being.

And when she told me that, I giggled because it was pretty funny and relatable. I hadn't heard that one before.

But then as that phrase settled in, I was thinking, "Wow, that is so me..."

Because if I'm being honest, I am really good at doing.

✅ Planning.
✅ Working.
✅ Cleaning.
✅ Organizing.
✅ Improving.
✅ Checking things off.

"Doing" is where I shine.

And while there's absolutely nothing wrong with working hard or being productive (it's mostly a good thing), I've been asking myself lately: Do I actually know how to just "be"?

Apparently my husband has been asking himself the same question for years because he loves to joke that his favorite version of me is pregnant me.

"Why," you ask?

Because pregnant me has about three speeds: slow, slower, and "I'm going to sit down for a minute." I always laugh and tell him not to get any ideas. But he's not wrong. When my energy is limited, I naturally slow down. But when it isn't, I tend to operate at about 100 miles per minute.

And that's what has been bothering me lately. Because even when I'm caught up...even when the work is done...even when there's nothing urgent demanding my attention...I still find it incredibly difficult to slow down.

Do you ever feel that way?

I don't think this is actually a time management problem. I think it's something deeper. That's exactly what we're talking about in this week's episode:

Ep 32 | Why You Can’t Slow Down as a Mom (Biblical Rest & Overwhelm for Christian Moms)

Listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify

Inside this episode, I talk about:

  • Why slowing down is often a trust issue, not a time issue
  • What Psalm 127 teaches us about striving and control
  • Why rest is a gift from God — not something we earn
  • How Ecclesiastes 3 reframes our expectations about seasons
  • Why our limitations may actually be God's protection, not a problem to solve

One thing that I've been keeping in my thoughts as I've studied this topic is Romans 12:2 — that we're transformed by the renewing of our minds.

And this has led me to a question I've been pondering lately:

If I know I need rest...
If I know I don't have to be responsible for every little thing...
If I know God is in control...

Then what exactly am I believing that's making it so hard to slow down? Because renewing our minds doesn't just mean identifying what's wrong. We have to actually replace it with the truth.

This is the deeper work God has been doing in me these last couple months. So I'd genuinely love to hear from you:

Do you think you're more of a human being or a human doing?

And why? Hit reply and tell me. Seriously. I have a feeling I'm not the only one wrestling through this.

Cheering you on,

P.S. We all know that friend who struggles to sit still for five minutes (maybe you thought of yourself 😅). Forward this email or the episode to encourage her this week. 💜
