Hi friend,
In less than a week, my oldest starts kindergarten. Homeschool kindergarten. The thing I've been waiting on for what feels like forever.
Last week, I spent a morning going through all of our curriculum — All About Reading, Math With Confidence, Handwriting Without Tears — and planning out the school year ahead. Some days I'm so excited I can barely stand it. Other days I just stare at the calendar and think, are we (I) actually ready for this?
But here's what I keep coming back to as I get closer to the season I prayed for.
Before I ever got to stay home, I had a career to finish and it wasn't my job to rush my way out the door once I knew I wanted to leave. I still had work in front of me — real work, for a real employer who was paying me to do it well. So that's what I did. I showed up. I gave it my best effort, even on the days I was counting down.
I think that's exactly what Nehemiah shows us in this week's episode.
Before Nehemiah ever started rebuilding the wall, he was the king's cupbearer. A good and trusted one. That wasn't some throwaway job he was biding his time in — it was a real position, and he held it faithfully, right up until God moved him somewhere else.
Faithfulness was never about the role. It was about the obedience.
And I think that's the part we skip over when we're in a season we're ready to leave. We start mentally checking out of the job, the housework, the this before God has actually moved us to the next. But your current role still matters. Even when you know it's not forever.
Like I mentioned last week, we're still dreaming about buying land and building a home someday. But that doesn't mean I get to check out of taking care of the home we're in right now. I still have to steward it well while I'm here.
So if you're waiting on something — a due date, a diagnosis, a different season of motherhood, a job you're ready to walk away from — I'd encourage you to stay faithful right where you are today. Listen, I know waiting is hard, but how you steward this season is still part of your story.
